This week, it’s Monthly Rumpus time again, Ilisa Barbash’s Sweetgrass takes over at the Landmark Lumiere, learn about the San Francisco Panorama at San Francisco State University, and maybe go see some clowns.
Monday 3/8: Come down to The Makeout Room for Sleeping With Friends, the love child of The Rumpus and McSweeney’s, featuring Jesse Nathan, Jami Attenberg (who you can see later this week at Modern Times), Mark Morford, Gerard Jones, Chicken John, Nato Green, and K. Flay. $10 cheap as always, or buy a $15 ticket and get a copy of Panorama (that’s a ticket to the baddest party in town and a copy of Panorama for a dollar less than the newsstand price, for all of you mathematicians out there.) 21+, 7pm @ 3225 22nd Street.
Tuesday 3/9: Support great authors at a great bookstore while contributing to community organizations. Joshua Mohr joins Jami Attenberg for a reading from her new book, The Melting Season at Modern Times. Not only will you get to see the woman behind The Rumpus’ hilarious Fucking And Writing interview, Modern Times will donate 10% of all book sales to a local immigrant rights organization. 7pm @ 888 Valencia Street.
At 8:30pm, head over to San Francisco State University’s McKenna theater where Dave Eggers and Oscar Villalon will discuss the San Francisco Panorama. The 320-page full color newspaper includes a broadsheet, magazine and book section, and (a personal favorite of mine) a rad space robot cut-out craft page, and has called into question the future of print publications as we know them. 1600 Holloway Avenue.
Wednesday 3/10: Visit San Francisco’s own all-female clown troupe, Circus Finelli, at their new home, Stage Werx. Their new show, Frau Bachfeifengest’s Spectacle of Perfection, will play bi-weekly through April. Tickets $20 ($10 students and seniors), 8-10pm @ 533 Sutter Street.
Thursday 3/11: After almost a year, the Contemporary Jewish Museum’s Jews on Vinyl exhibit is coming to a close with Back in the Sleeve a closing party dedicated to great pop music and the Jews who made it. Get down to the likes of Irving Fields, The Temptations, and Barbara Streisand, plus a special live performance. $5, 7pm @ 736 Mission Street.
Friday 3/12: Check out a Q&A with director Ilisa Barbash’s at the screening of her film, Sweetgrass, at the Landmark Lumiere theater. Then, be serenaded by Morning Coffee editor Dan Weiss and support drag-tastic candidate for district 6 supervisor, Anna Conda, at Kimo’s. A $5 donation gets you in for an evening of entertainment with The Yellow Dress, Adonasauris, Mutha Chucka, Pristeen Condition, Dam Dyke, Miss Prick, Anastacia, Liza with a P, and Tara Wrist. 21+, 9pm @ 1351 Polk Street.
Saturday 3/13: Immerse yourself in the (almost) lost art of shepherding at Ilisa Barbash’s Sweetgrass, a film documenting “the last ride of the American cowboy”, co-presented by The Believer. Barbash will be present at both of Friday and Saturday’s showings for a Q&A following the film. Tickets $10.50, showings at 7pm and 9:45pm, 1572 California Street.
Sunday 3/14: Fulfill all of your contemporary crafting needs at the Fort Mason Contemporary Craft Market. Tickets $8, 10am-5pm @ Marina Blvd. and Buchanan St.
