This week, San Francisco flaunts its artistic side with free museum admission on First Tuesday, the 17th Annual MoMA Warehouse Sale, SoEx’s 2010: Space Odyssey fund raiser, and ReFrame: Making Sense of Waste at ARC. Full up on traditional cultural enrichment this week? How about some Karaoke Porn?
Monday 5/3: Tonight VidSF teams up with Creative Commons for their salon on the Power of Open Education at pariSoma. Show up and make a donation to CC to see panel discussions by Brian Bridges (California Learning Resource Network (CLRN)), Murugan Pal (CK-12 Foundation), and Carolina Rossini, (Berkman Fellow, Peer2Peer University), or watch the live stream from the comfort of your own home thanks to VidSF. 7-9pm @ 1436 Howard Street.
Tuesday 5/4: All right, call it a cop out, but Spring has (mostly) sprung, I don’t think I’ve used this one yet, and when was the last time you visited a museum? It’s First Tuesday, and that means free museum admission at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the De Young, and the Legion of Honor. Play hooky, pack a bag lunch, picnic on the Legion of Honor’s historic grounds, and check out the Cartier and America exhibit, recently extended through May 9th.
Wednesday 5/5: Make it an entire week of art! SFMoMA will be fund raising for their own programs as well as supporting local artists through their 17th Annual Warehouse Sale at Fort Mason Artist Gallery. The sale continues through Sunday the 9th (with a date night on Thursday and a Paul Madonna signing on Saturday), but the sale kicks off tonight from 6-9pm. $10 admission (free for MoMA members and free all other days), 6-9pm @ Building A, Fort Mason Center.
Thursday 5/6: Striptease and porn meet karaoke at Deco Lounge for Porn-E-Oke. The brainchild of KJ Paul and Chicken John (aren’t you upset you didn’t think of this first?), Porn-E-Oke takes our proclivity for singing and dancing in the buff (don’t deny it!) out of the bedroom and puts it on the stage, in front of a montage of porn for your distraction and dismay! Admission is free, liquid courage is not. 21+, 8:30pm @ 510 Larkin Street.
Friday 5/7: Hannah Regev curates ReFrame: Making Sense of Waste at ARC. 15 artists interpret sustainability and consumerism through pieces that utilize and reexamine “waste”. Also, take advantage of the regular workshops hosted by ARC, including screen printing and collage. Opening reception 7-10pm, exhibit runs through the end of the month @ 1246 Folsom Street.
Saturday 5/8: Support Southern Exposure’s Artists in Education and Artist Resource programs by hitting up their annual auction fund raiser, 2010: Space Odyssey. The evening features live and silent art auctions, music, performances, and food and drinks, and the $35 ticket price supports the continuation of local art. Tickets $35+, 7:30-10:30pm @ 3030 20th Street.
Sunday 5/9: Celebrate Mother’s Day in San Francisco style. Grab a mother figure and head down to the 11th Annual How Weird Street Faire: BollyWeird, centered at 2nd and Howard Streets. The annual faire takes up ten city blocks with drinks, dancing, food, fashion, and healing arts (this is, after all, San Francisco). The faire is produced by and serves as a benefit for Peace Tour, an organization that spreads peace through benevolent technology. All ages, Noon-8pm.
