This week, moving into my new apartment takes much longer than I thought it would, this guy talks about UFOs at Amnesia, The Exploratorium gets spacey new installation art, and SF Zine Fest takes over the San Francisco County Fair building!
Monday 8/30: For the first time since the inception of Notable San Francisco, I’ve dropped the ball. In my defense, moving house on top of being a full time student and having a day job was just more than I could handle today, and I really couldn’t bear to give you less than one hundred and ten percent. Also, The Rumpus pays me in hamburgers and hugs. Not that I don’t love both hamburgers and hugs. So this Monday, cook yourself a nice meal, crack open that semi-fancy bottle of wine someone brought over that one time, and settle in with Ted Wilson’s latest review of the world or Antonia Crane’s recent interview/essay about the one-of-a-kind strip club carnival that is Jumbo’s Clown Room.
Tuesday 8/31: Head down to Amnesia, grab a drink, and learn about UFO’s with extraterrestrial expert Ruben Uriarte at the Jones Zone Variety Show. $3-7 at the door, 21+, 8pm-1am @ 853 Valencia Street.
Wednesday 9/1: Happy Hour Comedy celebrates its one year anniversary at Madrone tonight with free performances by Brendan Lynch, Trevor Hill, Katie Compa, Nick Palm, Dave Thomason, and Natasha Muse. 21+, 7-9pm @ 500 Divisadero Street.
Thursday 9/2: The Exploratorium gets grown-up tonight with this month’s After Dark: Cosmological Constructs. Installation art by Dan Goods, an artist at Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will make you feel like you’re in outer space while you enjoy a cocktail on the way to Megan Prelinger’s presentation on the advertising industry’s take on outer space. Free with museum admission, 6-10pm @ 3601 Lyon Street.
Friday 9/3: The Mission’s Artist Xchange kicks off their September show with an opening reception tonight. The printmaking show, which is up through the end of the month, features woodcuts, engravings, etchings, mezzotints, aquatints, drypoint, lithography, screen-printing, digital prints, giclée prints, and foil imaging. 7-10pm @ 3169 16th Street.
Saturday 9/4: Fans of physical media rejoice! SF Zine Fest is happening today and tomorrow at the San Francisco County Fair building in Golden Gate Park! Free admission, 11am-6pm both days @ the County Fair building (formerly the Hall of Flowers) in Golden Gate Park at 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way.
Sunday 9/5: When was the last time you got creative? Head over to The Fun House in the Excelsior for Sketch Sunday and get your art on with a live model. $15, 18+, 10am @ 4398 Mission Street.
