So, check out this interactive map of factory farms in the U.S.
It shows the population density of farm animals by county.
It also lets you cross reference this with meat packers. “Factory farms tend to be clustered around meat packers (shown by blue dots on the map), which reflects the control these increasingly consolidated slaughterhouses exert over farmers. Just four firms processed more than four out of five beef cattle in 2007, according to the report.”
This goes well with this article in Mother Jones, about how the Beef Industry has begun funding a new degree in “Beef Advocacy” to stop the influence of Michael Pollan’s books on campuses. I quote from the article: “Pollan,” Flores tells me over beers at Dupus Boomer’s, a campus bar, “is really our enemy right now…. In the future,” she says, “we’re the ones who are going to tell you about your beef.”
So much for book burnings. Now corporations can just drown them out. Reminds me of when the RIAA offered Los Angeles area boy scouts a “respect copyrights” patch.
