The media hasn’t covered itself in glory on this story so far–there have been conflicting reports from the beginning, which one can expect in any developing situation. As of now, while I’m writing this post, Giffords is in surgery. There’s no reputable word on what her condition is at present. Gawker has released this account from an eyewitness, and one of Giffords’ aides has been reported as killed. I’ll update this as more solid information becomes available.
Update: As of 4:05 EST, from the NY Times: “A surgeon at a hospital in Tucson said Ms. Giffords was shot in the head, but remains alive and he said he is ‘very optimistic about her recovery. He declined to say what kind of recovery she might have but said he was ‘about as optimistic as you can be’ in such a situation.”

Dear Rumpus Staff,
Thank you for posting this.
In the annals of history, the Arizona shootings will most likely be a nation changing event.
The vitriolic expression of contemporary media is appalling.
Our public and private school are now mandated in many states to address bullying.
And yet the bullying adult “conversations” of our nation often render us ineffective in leading the young.
Six innocent people have lost their lives. One, Christina-Taylor Green was born on 9-11-2001.
Thank you for noting the importance of this tragedy and not rushing to exploit it.
