“…it’s all around us, seeps into everything we do, but we don’t see it, we can’t see it, because it’s simply everywhere. It powers us into work, takes us on holiday, lights up our homes and cools down our food. It washes us and dresses us and stirs our tea. The computer I’m typing this on – and the computer you’re reading it on – is made from oil.”
At The Guardian, this week is all about oil.
One year after the oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 men and caused the disastrous three-month BP Oil Spill, The Guardian has asked eight writers from around the world to write short stories revolving around oil.
The oil stories began on April 15th and will run until April 22nd. The first story, “Captive,” by Rose Tremain, will break the hearts of all animal lovers; “On Business,” by Robin Yassin-Kassab is about a mysterious trip to the desert of Damascus; and graphic novelist Simone Lia’s piece, “A Well-Oiled Mind” is a beautifully illustrated nightmare. Other writers include: Tim Gautreaux, Joanna Kavenna, China Miéville, Mohammed Hasan Alwan, and Alain Mabanckou.
