MONDAY 4/18: The Poetry Society of America presents six poets—three American and three Irish— discussing the relationship of Irish and American poetry at “Cultural Cross-Currents: A Trans-Atlantic Conversation in Verse,” with poets Greg Delanty, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, Galway Kinnell, Heather McHugh, Dennis O’Driscoll, and Jean Valentine. TUESDAY 4/19: Tonight, go see Ferlinghetti, the 2009 documentary directed by Christopher Felver about poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti. The film includes interviews with Ferlinghetti and Billy Collins, Allen Ginsberg, Dennis Hopper, and others. After the film there will be a Q&A with Felver and poet Gil Fagiani. John D. Calandra Italian American Institute. 6 p.m. Free.
WEDNESDAY 4/20: Page Meets Stage at the Bowery Poetry Club, with John Murillo, Up Jump the Boogie, representing the page and performance artist and poet Matt Gano will represent the stage. In addition to his chapbooks, Gano has an album titled, I Eight The Infinite. 8 p.m. $12, $6 for students.
THURSDAY 4/21: Rumpus Books Editor Andrew Foster Altschul will read from his latest book, Deus Ex Machina, along with writer Nick Flynn, who will read from his new poetry collection, The Captain Asks for a Show of Hands. Drinks served! powerHouse Arena. 7 p.m. Free.
FRIDAY 4/22: It’s Earth Day. Celebrate our planet by learning more about it with renowned scientist Tim Flannery speaking about his new book Here on Earth: A Natural History of the Planet. Cooper Union’s Rose Auditorium. 6:30 p.m. Free.
SATURDAY 4/23: The 10th Annual Tribeca Film Festival begins this week, April 20 and runs until May 1. Today is “Tribeca Talks: Pen to Paper—Based on True Events.” Steven Silver, director and screenwriter of The Bang Bang Club; photographer and co-author of The Bang Bang Club: Snapshots from a Hidden War Greg Marinovich; Adam Kassen and Mark Kassen, directors of Puncture; and Chris Lopata, screenwriter of Puncture will discuss how writers and filmmakers turn true events into films. Moderated by author and critic John Anderson. Barnes and Noble Union Square. 1 p.m. Free.
SUNDAY 4/24: A must see film at the Tribeca Film Festival today is Black Butterflies, which tells the true story of poet Ingrid Jonker, dubbed South Africa’s Sylvia Plath. The film is set in Capetown in the 1960s amid the political climate of Apartheid. Clearview Cinemas Chelsea. 3:30 p.m. $16.
