This week in San Francisco, Top Gun turns 25, class it up with Free Museum Day and then celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the whole entire Mission.
Monday, May 2nd – There are a couple of holidays this week. One, and probably the most relevant to your life, is the 25th Anniversary of Top Gun. Grab your aviators and your cockiest attitude and celebrate the years of bad-assery at the Metreon. Showtimes.
Tuesday, May 3rd – Free museum day! The de Young, SF MoMa, Yerba Buena, the Conservatory of Flowers and the Legion of Honor all throw open their doors to the common folk. This happens the first Tuesday of every month, but I bet you a dollar that if you don’t go this time, you never will. Get there, learn stuff.
Wednesday, May 4th – Rumpus pals ZYZZYVA celebrate their Spring 2011 issue at the Booksmith in the Haight at 7pm. Go say hi, meet the new editors(!) and listen to some of the most talented West Coast writers around.
Thursday, May 5th – Happy Cinco de Mayo! You should know – you are allowed to get as drunk as you want, kittens, because cab rides are FREE tonight. You heard me. Additionally, my vote for where to do so is El Valenciano. They have epic live music on Thursday nights, go check it out.
Friday, May 6th – Local author Katie Arnold-Ratliff presents her debut novel, Bright Before Us, at Green Apple Books for a reading and signing at 7pm. In Arnold-Ratliff’s novel, the 25-year-old protagonist discovers a dead body on Ocean Beach in San Francisco prompting a quarter-life crises. If that hasn’t caught your attention, read this: “Katie Arnold-Ratliff writes sentences that have the luminous candor of X-rays, laser-traceries of the human heart.” Laser-traceries, people. Serious stuff.
Saturday, May 7th – Start off your Saturday with a party! Mission Neighborhood’s Cinco de Mayo Festival will take place in Dolores Park, 10am-6pm. Should be a beautiful day and a great time with live music, crafts and good ole neighborhood fun. PS. This is an alcohol-free, family-friendly festival – don’t be that guy. In the evening, get yo’self to Bottom of the Hill for a sweet line-up: Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinny fame shares the bill with Billy & Dolly and The Bruises. Doors at 9:30pm, $12 advance tickets.
Sunday, May 8th – Sundays are great days to class it up a bit – in addition to Sunday Streets kicking off summer in the Mission, there’s a free classical trumpet performance at the Community Music Center at 7:30pm and/or you can take advantage of $10 tickets to the the Smuin Ballet Spring Program, via Travelzoo.
Don’t forget, you have a date on Monday, May 9th with The Rumpus at the Makeout Room! Try to get to third base this time 😉
