Not to be confused with the walk of shame: SlutWalks are a rising movement to draw attention to the culture of blaming the victim in sexual assault cases. The first SlutWalk took place in Toronto, organized after this public statement from a Canadian police officer: “I’ve been told I’m not supposed to say this – however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised.”
The protesters march the street, some dressed in fishnets and lingerie, with signs like “Sluts pay taxes” or “Met a slut today? Don’t assault her.” They also chant “Slut, slut. Ho, ho. Yes means yes, and no means no!” A SlutWalk recently took place in Boston, one is planned for D.C. in August, and more are planned around the globe.
