Saturday Morning Links

Good morning, all. Today, I’ll be stepping in for Brian Spears, who’s getting married this weekend. Congratulations, Amy and Brian, from everyone at The Rumpus! Now, links!

In case you missed it, V.S. Naipaul recently said “I don’t think so” when asked if any woman writer was his literary match. His reasoning? Their “sentimentality, the narrow view of the world.”

The Guardian has a test you can take to see if, as he also said, it’s possible to tell the difference between men and women’s writing.

Also, Meg Pokrass knows that this whole thing deserved a talk show animation.

In other news, snake oil actually works, as long as it’s actually snake oil.

And also, as far as I can tell, it’s pretty much library-geddon right now. In New York, where the system is facing cutbacks so severe that the few remaining branches would only be open 2-3 days a week, there is a hug-in at 2pm today. And yesterday in Oakland, there was a funeral procession for the libraries, where 14 branches might soon close, leaving just 4 branches open 3 days a week. Seriously, people. This is so depressing.

  1. Wow, I did worse than chance on that quiz. I did get VS Naipaul right, although I thought it was Achebe.

  2. Thank you for spreading the word about the Oakland Public Library’s funeral. We aren’t dead just yet, so the public is encouraged to write the Oakland City Council and urge them to Save City Services between now and their expected decision June 21. Their contact info is here: http://saveoaklandlibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Contact%20City%20Officials.PDF
    Thanks again for the mention!
