So who are all these hackers anyway? Here’s a quick video introduction.
LulzSec has been grabbing headlines for the past week. They hit Citi customer accounts, the FBI, and the CIA. This week’s Titanic Takeover Tuesday took down a bunch of gaming sites. And who can forget the PBS hack last month, in retaliation for negative PBS coverage of WikiLeaks?
And the weirdest of all: they’re threatening to release 200,000 Brink user accounts if Bethesda doesn’t release more information about their upcoming game, Skyrim.
Nerd rage, indeed.
But don’t forget about Anonymous! They say they’re interested in hacktivism, not chaos. They’ve targeted Turkey and Egypt over internet censorship. They went after Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and others for refusing to send payments to WikiLeaks. They also possibly took down Sony PlayStation Network (PSN) earlier this spring, in retaliation for their suit against a PS3 modder. Anonymous later retaliated when police found some of their members.
Other high-profile hacks that don’t seem linked to these groups include intrusions at Lockheed Martin, a Gmail phishing operation, and this week’s IMF attack.
We might be heading toward an all-out hacker war at this point. Stay tuned, and change your passwords.
