Monday, August 15: Bird & Beckett in Glen Park is hosting a free poetry and jazz pairing, featuring a lineup headed by Paula Hackett-the open mic starts up after scheduled reading wraps, so bring what you have and enjoy, 7 PM FREE, Bird and Beckett. If you have time, head back deeper into town for some laughs at the 50 Mason Street Free Comedy Night, in the latest installment of SF Live! Headliners from LA, SF, NYC and Chicago will be on hand, starting at 9:30 PM, FREE 50 Mason Street.
Tuesday, August 16: Music and poetry at Booksmith. Yuri Kageyama explores a native Japanese woman’s in a nonnative language-English-and expresses her own bi-cultural experiences surrounding race, sexuality, and family from this periphery. Music and further verse by Eric Kamau Gravatt and Isaku Kageyama. 7:30PM FREE, Booksmith.
Wednesday, August 17: Smack Dab’s monthly open mic-“All ages, all genders, all the time”- kicks off at 7:30PM, and will open with a set from local ukulele duo Fleigh. Any bystanders game to participate are encouraged to do so, keeping within the 5 minute time limit FREE Magnet SF.
Thursday, August 18: Dennis Lehane is reading from his latest thriller, Moonlight Mile, at the Herbst Theater, 8PM. Femina Potens and Feminist Porn Network co-host “The Other View,” a live talk show focusing on topics affecting the queer, women, sex worker, kink, and trans communities-get tickets to the first show for $10, at Tall Tree Tambo It’s also Wildcard Night in YBCA’s Smut Capital of America film series, celebrating SF”s Sex Cinema Revolution all summer long. They’re not releasing the film title, but you can be sure to be shocked 7:30PM YBCA
Friday, August 19: Counter Pulse presents Mix Tape for Ophelia, an “exploration into the world of adolescent girls that draws from Shakespeare, our own experiences and Reviving Ophelia by Dr. Mary Piper, one of the few book addressing the issues specific to adolescent girls in contemporary society.” $20, 8-10PM Counter Pulse.
Saturday, August 20: Don’t miss the Alamo Square Flea Market, SF’s annual shot at grabbing vintage clothing, antiques for home, and other unique items. New this year is the indie mart, and Off the Grid food trucks on hand to provide munches and drinks. 1-3PM, Alamo Square. The SF Street Food Fest is happening all day in the Mission, where food trucks abound for tastings and fuller fillings. There’s an after party at Public Works, for those compelled to dance off the calories. Festival from 11AM-7PM, party from 8PM-2AM, both events FREE. And YBCA will have its own food-truck-and-lit-party extravaganza, with literary death match and the kronos quartet on hand. 12-8PM, FREE
