Monday 9/19: Bay Area based John Sakkis and Lynn Xu headline the 1st and 3rd Mondays Poets! series at Bird and Beckett tonight. Readings will be followed by an open mic. 7PM, FREE. A lecture on socially engaged art at UC Berkeley’s Center for New Media asks, “as social engagement increases, the artfulness and conceptual rigor decreases. Are there ways to get out of this impasse?” FREE.
Tuesday 9/20: Editor Alia Malek discusses excerpts from Patriot Acts: Narratives of Post 9/11 Injustice with Karen Korematsu. City Light Books 7PM, FREE. 100 Thousand Poets for Change event hosted by Jennifer Barone at Viracocha –open mic poetry and live jazz, with proceeds benefiting Viracocha events, 8-10:30PM.
Wednesday 9/21: The annual Big Book Sale is happening at Fort Mason today through Sunday. Everything is up for $5 or less and it’s not just books-check out the half-million plus selection for favorite vinyl, DVD’s, CD’s, books on tape, and smatterings of posters, art, and other media.
Thursday 9/22: Cyrus Console, Hillary Gravendyk, Donald Revell and Elizabeth Robinson read from their newest poetic works at City Lights 7PM. FREE. The Cine + Mas SF Latino Film Festival opens tonight at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts. 7PM, $10-$12. Austin, TX’s Bed Post Confessions, featuring writers and artists performing works representing a range of sexuality, comes to SF’s Make-Out Room. 8:30-11PM $15.
Friday 9/23: The San Francisco Erotic Art Exhibition opens today at The Artists Alley 4-9PM, FREE.
Saturday 9/24: The Museum of Children’s Art in Oakland is holding the opening reception for A Child’s View from Gaza featuring poetry, photography and multimedia works illustrating the ‘realities and dreams for the future’ by Palestinian children ages 8-14. Cartooning and workshops as part of the reception, 1-3PM, FREE.
