MONDAY 10/03: Science Fiction Buffs, this one’s for you. The Big Read: Utopia/Dystopia panel will discuss the worlds sci-fi writers create. Panel includes writers Anna North, America Pacifica; Charles Yu, How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe; and Kathleen Ann Goonan, Queen City Jazz and This Shared Dream. Moderated by DongWon Song, editor at Hachette’s science fiction and fantasy imprint, Orbit. The Center for Fiction. 7 p.m. Free.
TUESDAY 10/04: Fatherhood is the theme for this month’s Largehearted Lit at WORD. Greg Olear celebrates the release of his novel, Fathermucker, and John Sellers will read from his memoir, The Old Man and the Swamp. Both will also discuss how music has influenced their work and singer-songwriter Jenna Torres will play some songs. 7 p.m. Free.
WEDNESDAY 10/05: 192 Books presents a reading with Michael Ondaatje. Ondaatje will read from his new book, The Cat’s Table. The reading will be held at the Paula Cooper Gallery. 6:30 p.m. Free.
The Center for Book Arts will host its Annual Chapbook Reading with the 2011 contest winner Nehassaiu deGannes, along with poets Mark McKain and Sue Burton. Curators Kimiko Hahn and Sharon Dolin will also read. 6:30 p.m. $10 suggested admission, $5 for members.
THURSDAY 10/06: The Inspired Word presents Big Apple BAP/Fall Edition: NYC’s Best American Poetry Poets, featuring poets who have been included in the Best American Poetry Anthology. Poets include: Truck Darling, Matthea Harvey, Julie Sheehan, Kimiko Hahn, Marilyn Nelson, Marc Jaffee, Anna Ziegler, Jason Schneiderman, Cornelius Eady, Timothy Liu, and Gregory Pardlo. Hosted by the founding editor of the Best American Poetry series, David Lehman. One and One Bar & Restaurant (downstairs Nexus Lounge). 6:30 p.m. $15, $7 for students.
FRIDAY 10/07: Storybook Burlesque presents a burlesque interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s classic, Through the Looking-Glass. Galapagos Art Space. 8 p.m. $15.
SUNDAY 10/09: Blake Butler will read from his new nonfiction book, Nothing: A Portrait of Insomnia at BookCourt. 7 p.m. Free.
