Writing With A Pen

“For me, writing longhand is an utterly personal task where the outer world is closed off, just my thoughts and the movement of my hand across the page to keep me company. The whole process keeps me in touch with the craft of writing. It’s a deep-felt, uninterrupted connection between thought and language which technology seems to short circuit once I begin to use it.”

At The Guardian, Lee Rourke reveals his preference for pen and paper, articulating many of the main differences between longhand and computer composition.

I’m writing something new and longer by hand in a Moleskine folio-sized ruled notebook and it’s incredibly gratifying. There’s another, purely financial, reason why this is a good idea. According to my sister in law who’s an archivist at Yale, when you get to the point where you’re selling your papers to a library, hand-written material is way more valuable.
