Tuesday 1/10: Amnesia hosts the second installment of its Family Folk Explosion this January, featuring local folk acts all night, free of charge. 10pm.
Wednesday 1/11: Brava theater hosts a pay-what-you-can night as part of the opening celebrations for New Fire, a performance that” follows the sacred geography of Indigenous American ancestors to tell a post-modern story of rupture and return.”
Thursday 1/12: Guillermo Gomez-Pena is joined by Laura Levin & Elaine Katzenberger in an “evening of performative pedagogy” for the release of his latest, “Conversations Across Borders.” Free, 7pm. City Lights. Green Arcade features readings from “On the Ground: An Illustrated Anecdotal History of the Sixties Underground Press in the U.S,” Free, 7pm.
Friday 1/13: Get your back luck on with “13 Tall Tales of Bad Luck, Grave Misfortune, Sorrow and Woe,” a Zyzzyva + SF writer’s Grotto co-hosted party for Zyzzyva‘s winter issue release. 13 writers, including Andrew Altschul, Tom Barbash, Troy Jollimore, Heather Altfeld, Malena Watrous and audience members, with three minutes in which to pack their worst tales of hard luck and dread. Free, plus free beer from the 21st Amendment, 7pm at the Writer’s Grotto.
Saturday 1/14: Writers With Drinks presents “An Evening of Uncomfortable Sex Talk,” featuring Justin Chin, Charlie Anders, Diana Turken, Sarah Fran Wisby, Chelsea Martin, and Thomas Roche. $5-$10 sliding scale, 7:30pm.
Sunday 1/15: The Tet Festival celebrating Vietnamese Lunar New Year-all day in Little Saigon. YBCA presents Masala Boom with resident artist Derick Ion offering guests chai tea and mehandi, the art form of henna ritual. Free, 2-8pm. Berkeley Underground presents a free screening of 1925 classic Lost World at the Tannery.
