Glasgow-based artist and illustrator David Shrigley’s largest show to date, Brain Activity, opens tomorrow at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
Called “Kierkegaard, only with marker pens,” Shrigley’s work presents a powerful mix of comedy and existential profundity. In an interview with Dave Eggers, Shrigley said of his use of comedy:
“It enables you to say what you want to say, and vent your anger about just the lunatic, idiot world we live in.”
We saw this same exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London a few months ago, and have absolutely never laughed so hard in an art gallery. It was uncomfortable at times, which made it all the better.
