If you are a fan of author Thomas Pynchon, you’ll recognize the image as one of the key symbols from his 1966 book The Crying of Lot 49. You can find them scattered about in major cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. Apparently this literary treasure hunt is an elaborate promotional ploy on behalf of Penguin Press, who recently announced that Pynchon’s work will be available as e-books. According to Google maps, there are fifteen to be discovered here in San Francisco. Though it’s unclear what the end result of the hunt will be, Penguin Press seems to be insinuating it ends with a twist.
