MONDAY 8/13: Melville House, WORD, and The Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn team up to present a Words by the Water listening party with Dave Tompkins (How to Wreck a Nice Beach). Tomkins will introduce each song, answer audience questions, and sign books. East River State Park, 7pm, free.
The Franklin Park Reading Series this month is dedicated to “Secrets and Mysteries,” with readings by Tayari Jones (Silver Sparrow), Victor Lavalle (The Devil in Silver), Lincoln Michel (Tin House), Courtney Maum (Hobart), and Caitlin Elizabeth Harper (The Renegade Reading Series). 8pm, free.
TUESDAY 8/14: Leigh Stein (The Fallback Plan) and Sasha Fletcher (When All Our Days Are Numbered Marching Bands Will Fill The Streets and We Will Not Hear Them Because We Will Be Upstairs in the Clouds) host The Book Report Reading, with Claire Dunnington, Ben Fama, Dan Magers, and Eric Ziegenhagen. THURSDAY 8/16: Matthew Battles reads from The Sovereignties of Invention, followed by an interview with Joanne McNeil. McNally Jackson, 7pm, free.
FRIDAY 8/17: Ugly Duckling Presse brings poets Sandra Liu, Jacqueline Waters, Dolan Morgan, Niina Pollari, and Joe Hall to Goodbye Blue Monday for the Stain of Poetry Reading Series. 1087 Broadway, 7pm, free.
SATURDAY 8/18: Peter Joseph (Boozy Brunch) presents his book at WORD, with drinks. This is an opportunity to day drink at a bookstore. 2pm, free.
SUNDAY 8/19: Housing Works Bookstore Café hosts a free fiction writing workshop with Lev AC Rosen (All Men of Genius). 11am.
Book club update: McNally Jackson’s Essays Book Group will be discussing T. Fleischmann’s SYZYGY, BEAUTY, on September 3, in case you’d like to begin reading.
