What if Puerto Rico becomes a state?
What if our flag looks like this? What if we have to change that “fifty nifty United States” song to “fifty-one nifty, fun United States”? Puerto Rico would get federal aid, but they’d also have to pay federal taxes. The Washington Post explains more here.

This article on the Washington Post has some misleading information about what the Commonwealth status of Puerto Rico really means. For one thing companies doing business in PR do in fact pay corporate taxes, they just pay a smaller amount. Also, it’s not that Puerto Ricans don’t pay federal taxes…they pay Social Security and Medicare taxes. They also pay a higher percentage of sale taxes than the majority of the states in the mainland do. I think the most notable aspect of the Commonwealth status is that Puerto Ricans cannot vote in Presidential elections, even though they are American citizens. They can however serve in any of the U.S. Military branches…
My point is that it would be good if you provided a link that tackles the other side of story, the Puerto Ricans who do not wish to become the 51st state.
