What if, instead of crude, crass graffiti, walls were painted with poetry?
This reality has already started in Camden, New Jersey where words from Sonia Sanchez’s poem “Ballad” were printed on the face of a rundown, boarded up building. On the News Works blog, Kimberly Paynter comments, “The image of the abandoned house represented a truth to me; that no matter one’s physical condition, beauty still exists within the intangible. The nature of graffiti is that it’s unavoidable —whomever is around, is forced to see it.”
Consider this a call to action: poets, take to the streets.
