Stock images are a strange form of art: we see them constantly, but we’re only rarely aware of them and almost never think critically about them.
Subversive online lifestyle(ish) magazine DIS puts that strangeness under the microscope with disimages, its collection of weird and wonderful original stock photos.
One of the photo series in that collection is Maja Cule’s Laughing Alone with Salad, which probes the stock-photo meme popularized —and wordlessly skewered—by The Hairpin.
Check out The Hairpin’s interview with Cule for a cool glimpse into her artistic process and unexpected revelations about our relationship to stock photography.
