There is a sexy beast waiting to rip your clothes off. He’s dealing with a Devil inside because he’s a man with sexual urges.
“Loverman” was released on the 1994 record “Let Love In.”
We’re Devils in the sack and you’ll enjoy it, deal with it, love it. L is for LOVE:
“Loverman” will give you all of the information you need regarding the sexual relationships of men and women. You don’t even have to go buy a John Gray book or watch 20 episodes of Dr. Phil. And why would you listen to those hacks when you have Nick Cave?
Play rough in bed, every once in a while it should be a sexual UFC octagon of sweat, pleasure and pain.
Yet as Lovermen, we’re going to make sure you’re very taken care of.
“R is for RAPE me, M is for MURDER me, A is for ANSWERING all of my prayers, N is for KNOWING your Loverman’s going to be the answer to all of yours.”
This Devil is really at your mercy and sometimes can’t perform as he wishes.
“He’s old and he’s stupid and he’s hungry and he’s sore and he’s blind and he’s lame and he’s dirty and he’s poor….”
This song always reminds me of relationship sex because that’s so much more fun that casual sex. The intimacy on a daily basis of life, then letting the Devil out of the cage to play.
As Nick says, we have no choice:
“I am what I am what I am what I am, Forgive me baby, my hands are tied /
And I got no choice, no, I got no choice at all.”
Who else knew exactly who he was? Popeye, unapolegitcally:
We are what we are so let’s own it and revel in it.
Yet as Nick says later in the song, you will be taken care of.
L is for LOVE, baby
O is for O yes I do
V is for VIRTUE, so I ain’t gonna hurt you
E is for EVEN if you want me to
R is for RENDER unto me, baby
M is for that which is MINE
A is for ANY old how, darling
N is for ANY old time

I saw James, the lead singer of Metallica, in the bathroom at a Nick Cave show around 2000. We said hi, and as he hung out with his wife in the lobby before the show nobody approached him. Which is very rare for the popular metal band as they’re usually pummeled by fans, just not at a Nick Cave show. Bad Seeders are there for King Ink and pop metal bands aren’t our concern.
Yet James found himself and briefly became a Bad Seeder as Metallica did their version of “Loverman”:
“How much longer?” The Bad Seeds whisper throughout the song. It’s the call and response song that Nick has used throughout the years. That woman wants to know, when are you getting in here? We have some stuff to do.
The lesson we learn today is we’re men, we’re animals, we’re here to tear it up in bed and give you a good cuddle. Indulge us and we’ll take care of you.
“I’ll be your Loverman! I got a masterplan /
To take off your dress and be your man /
Seize the throne, seize the mantle /
Seize the crown /
‘Cause I am what I am what I am what I am /
I’m your Loverman!”
Thanks for reading, and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.
