This year’s PEN/Pinter Prize, “awarded annually to a British writer or a writer resident in Britain of outstanding literary merit,” goes to Tom Stoppard.
Stoppard’s plays, including classics like Jumpers and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, have been interrogating philosophy, society, and humanity for decades. He has also participated in several human-rights campaigns.
Of Harold Pinter, in whose memory the award is given, Stoppard says, “Harold was one of the reasons I wanted to write plays…He became and remained a model for the kind of fearless integrity which PEN exists to defend among writers…”
