Most of us are familiar with Junot Diaz’s ability to weave his immigrant experience with his excellent writing style, but we may be less familiar with how he feels about the immigration issue. In fact, he believes immigration makes people uncomfortable because of misinterpretations of the immigrant experience.
As an example, he cites Spanish scholars’ fear of Spanglish, a language they see as detrimental to society. Diaz completely disagrees with this fear. Rather, he’s excited about the possibility of new immigrants learning from each other.
Of course, if you’ve read his work, his thoughts on Spanglish make perfect sense.
