Sunday 10/20: The Kindness of Strangers: A Festival of Storytelling begins today! Three weeks of carefully selected stories about strangers, with headliners Kim Morris, Eric Warner, and Amy Sumpter. Runs Sundays through Wednesdays through 11/6. 7:30 PM, $15, The Side Project Theatre.

Monday 10/21: Help raise money for 826CHI by attending Essay Fiesta! Writers Willy Nast and Karen Shimmin host this monthly event to bring local authors together for a night of first-person essays. 7 PM, free (but donations collected), The Book Cellar.

Wednesday 10/23: Join local author (and writer of the fantastic Rumpus essay “My Mother, My Daughter“) Samantha Irby of bitches gotta eat in celebrating her newly released book, Meaty. Check out Sausagefest! 7 PM, The Silver Room.

Thursday 10/24: Joshua Safran will be reading from his recent memoir, Free Spirit: Growing Up On the Road and Off the Grid. 6:30 PM, free, Women and Children First.

Saturday 10/26: Come check out The Paper Machete. It’s Chicago’s only “live magazine,” and this week’s got a great list of featured authors. 3 PM, free, The Green Mill.
