As a writer, I find myself compelled to reconcile the blithe sexual picaresque of my youth with the contrasting Sturm und Drang in my heart and brain that accompanied it. Figuring out how to capture the doubts and the questions—never mind the acts themselves—is a challenge I’m glad to discover I have company in tackling.
Dederer goes on to consider the works of said company, which range from Erica Jong’s Fear of Flying to Lena Dunham’s HBO hit Girls to Lidia Yuknavitch‘s memoir The Chronology of Water.
