Friday 9/5: David Tabak, author of the short story collection Lather Rinse Repeat, presents a reading of two short stories at City Lit Books. 6:30 p.m.

The Naked Girls Reading is back this month to entertain on the theme “Back to School.” Come to the Everleigh Social Club to be stimulated intellectually. 7 p.m.

Saturday 9/6: Go back to City Lit Books for a live reading and recording the Booked Podcast. Featured readers include Richard Thomas, Jac Jemc, Ben Tanzer, and Brandon Tietz. 5 p.m.

Sunday 9/7: Here, Chicago takes place at Stage 773. Bring a dish for the potluck, make some friends, and hear good stories from Abraham Mellish, Julie Steele, Jack Thurston Farrell, Kevin D’Ambrosio, and Deanna Moffitt. 7:30 p.m. 

Monday 9/8: Is This a Thing? showcases new Chicago voices. This month join them at O’Shaughnessy’s Public House for the “After School Special,” featuring Ali Kelley, Kathy O’Neill, Catharine Savage, Joanne Singleton, and Jim Sweeney. 7 p.m. 

Tuesday 9/9: The Society of Midland Authors presents a conversation with Rebecca Makkai and Cristina Henriquez at the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium of the Harold Washington Library. 6 p.m.

Wednesday 9/10: Rebecca Makkai goes solo at City Lit Books in conversation with Renee Rosen to talk about her novel The Hundred-Year House. 6:30 p.m.

Richard Fox has a new collection of poems called Hula. Diana Slickman reads these poems to you at The Book Cellar, 7 p.m.

The incomparable Mary Gordon stops at Women and Children First to discuss her collection of novellas, The Liar’s Wife. Gordon is an oft-honored writer: O’Henry Award, Story Prize, a Guggenheim. Get there to see her before she goes back to her teaching job at Barnard. 7:30 p.m.
