The expert lyricism in the music of Conor Oberst, founding member of Bright Eyes, is not often rivaled. Bright Eyes’s 2005 album, I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, peaked at #2 on the Billboard Independent Albums chart and made Time‘s list of top 10 best records of the year. “Lua,” the fourth track off the album, is heartbreaking in its honesty. Oberst sings:
I know you have a heavy heart
I can feel it when we kiss
So many men stronger than me
Have thrown their backs out trying to lift it
But me I’m not a gamble, you can count on me to split
The love I’ll sell you in the evening by the morning won’t exist
