Joyce Carol Oates talks about her new novel, inspired by her stalker:
Stephen King is a friendly acquaintance. He has been a very generous individual in the world of genre fiction, and of fiction generally. But more particularly, King was once “stalked” by an emotionally disturbed woman who also “stalked” me, about twenty years ago. Stephen hired a private detective to investigate the woman, to determine if she might be dangerous to his family. (I think this was his motive.) He sent me the detective’s report, which was minimal and not very helpful. The woman, whose name I have long forgotten, tried to sue Stephen for having “stolen” manuscripts or ideas from her; her accusation against me was that I had “stolen” a single poem — so bizarre!
