For thirteen years, Erin Fry has taught 6th grade language arts and history at a middle school in southern California. Every fall, she happily coaches cross country, which has taught her about running, determination, and just how loud middle schoolers get on a bus. Her first middle grade novel, Losing It, about an overweight boy who joins the cross country team, was published in 2012 by Amazon Children’s Publishing. Her other novels include Secrets of the Book and The Benefactor. In 2003, on a break from teaching, Fry was hired by Teachers’ Curriculum Institute, where for six years, she wrote social studies curriculum, textbooks, and assessment. That same year, she started reviewing Kidlit for Publishers Weekly and hasn’t stopped. Recently, she and a fellow lesson developer co-founded Curriculum Specialists, through which they write standards-aligned Teachers’ Guides for authors and publishers. When she’s not teaching or writing, Fry is most likely hiking, running, or cheering for Cal Berkeley where her oldest son is a freshman (Go Bears!). In 2013, along with her husband and oldest son, she summited Mt. Whitney in one day. This summer she plans to hike Half Dome in Yosemite National Park.
