With director Jonathan Moscone taking on playwright Charles Ludlam, the distinguished proponent of Theatre of the Ridiculous (if “distinguished” is the right word), laughter is to be expected. This production of The Mystery of Irma Vep marks Mr. Moscone’s final turn as Cal Shakes’s artistic director, before he departs across the Bay to become chief of civic engagement for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. With the ever reliable comic experts Danny Scheie and Liam Vincent making 35 costume changes to play eight different characters, this Mystery should make the Berkeley hills echo with guffaws.
