Friday 12/11: Volatile! opens at the Poetry Foundation Gallery. Curator Debra Riley Parr discusses the exhibition with scent designers, artists, and poets at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday 12/12: Unabridged Bookstore celebrates their 35th anniversary! Stop by from 6 p.m.–9 p.m. for treats, raffles, and a retrospective.

Tuesday 12/15: December’s Open Door Reading features the School of the Art Institute’s Elise Paschen with student Katy Jo Smith and New Trier High School and Northwestern University’s John O’Connor with student Alison O’Connor. Poetry Foundation, 7 p.m.

J.M. Bates performs a live reading of her debut novel, Brilliant Shadows, and encourages ideas, questions, and comments in response. Uncharted Books, 7 p.m.

Wednesday 12/16: MAKE #16 contributors Bill Savage, Sooze Lanier, Eileen Mueller, and Eric Plattner share their work at Sector 2337. 7 p.m.

Women & Children First launches Recommended Reading Night with an inaugural gathering! Aleksander Hemon, Gina Frangello, Christine Sneed, Rebecca Makkai, Eric Charles May, and other local authors talk for ten minutes each about their favorite books of the year. Snacks, wine, and cider will be served. 7 p.m.

Thursday 12/17: City Lit Books celebrates Gint Aras and the release of his new book, The Fugue. 6:30 p.m.
