And: what we’re talking about, here, really, is intimacy. In order for someone in a relationship to be especially intimate with you, he (or she) has to be less intimate with someone else. There’s only a fixed amount of intimacy available in the world, the brittle, noble, painful, moving, awesome thing that is intimacy between people, in which people allow themselves to be known.
