This is one of the reasons it was important to see Shakespeare performed, and not just to read him. Many of Shakespeare’s jokes seem obscure today; they rely on topical information, or their sexual innuendo relies on bawdy puns that use words no longer circulating in our slang… Shakespeare’s plays are so full of wit that the laughter sometimes bubbles up around the theater like a hidden springs, first in one mouth, and then in another.
