Friday 12/16: Women & Children First’s annual Recommended Reading Night is back! Rebecca Makkai, Deborah Jian Lee, Emily Gray Tedrowe, Jasmine Sanders, and Thea Goodman will be discussing their top two favorite books of 2016, followed by a Q&A and book signing. 7 p.m., free.

Saturday 12/17: Head to Bow Truss Coffee for the third installment of the Chimera Reading Series! Readers include Amber Carpenter, Evan Kleekamp, Julia Fine, and Sara Hendery. 7 p.m., donations to 826CHI are encouraged.

Sunday 12/18: The Marrow, hosted by Leah Pickett and Naomi Huffman, welcomes Gina Frangello, author of Every Kind of Wanting, and founder of Build Coffee Hannah Nyhart for a reading and discussion of their work. The Whistler, 6 p.m., free. 21+.

Tuesday 12/20: The Open Door Reading Series at The Poetry Foundation welcomes Jamila Woods, Nate Marshall, and Carlina Duan. 7 p.m., free.

Wednesday 12/21: Visit City Lit Books for the Prose and Poetry and Potentially Other Things Open Mic Night! 6:30 p.m., free.
