In a review of Jim James’s newest album Eternally Even, Pitchfork writer Ryan Leas declares that the artist “goes all-in on a frayed, psychedelic-soul aesthetic” that is only hinted at in previous recordings by James’s mainstay band, My Morning Jacket. Though the bulk of his songwriting efforts have gone into that long-enduring Kentucky-based rock group over the last eighteen years, James’s latest funky, fuzzy, highly melodic solo effort has all the trappings of a labor of love. Expert production from the wonderful guitarist Blake Mills gives the standout protest track, “Here In Spirit,” a clean polish. James conveys an urgent message for the present moment as he sings:
If you don’t speak out
We can’t hear it
