“Where Women’s Stories Go to Die” is part of an exploration of the toxic sexism, misogyny, and harassment that derailed my early aspirations as a visual artist and that I quickly met up with again in my career as a writer—and also, of course, in my wider life. As with many female creators—especially those telling stories about female lives—sexism and exclusion has marginalized my work, deformed my career, and made me “angry.” Rooting around in the realm of dark, visual humor seems to bear the possibility of being reparative.
