Monday 9/17: Minneapolis professor and author Shannon Gibney will bring her new young adult novel, Dream Country, to Red Balloon Bookshop in St. Paul. Join Shannon (See No Color) in conversation with fellow author Bryan Bliss (We’ll Fly Away) about the new book, a heartbreaking story of five generations of young people from a single African-and-American family pursuing an elusive dream of freedom. Red Balloon Bookshop, 6:30 p.m., free.
Tuesday 9/18: Minneapolis artist Blue Delliquanti will be discussing the explosion of comics and graphic novels in the past fifteen years and their increasingly popular use to tell stories traditionally limited to prose. Her recent collaboration with Kevin Knodell and David Axe, The ‘Stan, is a collection of short comics about America’s longest war. The tales in the book are all true and took place in roughly the first decade of the US military intervention in Afghanistan. Magers & Quinn Booksellers, 7 p.m., free.
Friday 9/21: Anoka-Ramsey Community College English faculty Katie Rauk, Paige Riehl, and Jasmin Ziegler read their poetry and prose. Prior to the reading there is a free tour of Banfill-Locke and a social half-hour at 6:30 p.m. Banfill Locke Center For the Arts, 7 p.m., free.
Saturday 9/22: Join Ellen Lansky and William Reichard for a reading from their new books. Moon Palace Books, 2 p.m., free.
Here’s a thing: It’s only September, but it’s not too early to get excited about Wordplay. It’s a huge party in celebration of words, books, and the people who love them, and it’s coming to Minneapolis in May. Check it out, put it on your calendar, and get ready, because it’s gonna be big!
