The Historical Society of Philadelphia will present “The First Gay American Novel: A Forgotten Book by Sarah Orne Jewett” a talk by Dr. Don Hames Brown about A Marsh Island, the little-known 19th-century American novel by Jewett. 5:30 p.m. at The Library Company of Philadelphia.
Penn Book Center will host a reading and discussion with Joshua Rivkin, author of Chalk: The Art and Erasure of Cy Twombly. 6 p.m. at Penn Book Center.
The Green Line Café Poetry Series and Poets in Common will present an evening of poetry featuring readings by Shevaun Brannigan, Daniel Jones, Ailin Luca, and Ditta Baron Hoeber. Hosted by Jen Anolik. 7 p.m. at Green Line on Locust.
Wednesday 10/17: The Kelly Writers House will host a poetry reading by Rae Armantrout. 6 p.m. at Kelly Writers House.
Penn Book Center will host an evening of poetry featuring readings by Henk Rossouw, Julie Bouwsma, and Cynthia Dewi Oka. 6 p.m. at Penn Book Center.
The PressPlay Reading Series and Live Podcast returns to Fergie’s Pub with their October feature, Pecola Breedlove and the Freedom Party. Featuring an interview with founder Christopher KP Brown and lead host Jazmine Hawkins, readings by Breedlove poets Mizz Jasz, Ngozi Magena, and Sir Smith, and an open mic! Hosted by Warren Longmire. 6:30 p.m. at Fergie’s Pub.
Tragic: The Gathering, an occasional reading series of and for trans writers, returns to Wooden Shoe Books and Records with readings by Noor Ibn Najam, Prairie M. Faul, and Charlie Stern. 7 p.m. at Wooden Shoe Books and Records.
Writers in Camden and Rutgers University-Camden LGBTQIA+ History Month will present a reading by Melissa Febos, author of the memoir Whip Smart and the essay collection Abandon Me. 7 p.m. at Rutgers University-Camden.
The Hatchery Reading Series returns to The Monkey Club! This year, they are featuring a different local writing organization each month. This month’s feature is Drexel Writer’s Room, and the readers will be Lauren Lowe, Norman Cain, and Carol McCullough. 7 p.m. at The Monkey Club.
The Random Name Poetry Series will present readings by Anneliese Downey and Brendan Lorber. Hosted by David Hancock. 7:30 p.m. at Dahlak Paradise.
Thursday 10/18: Penn Cook Center will host a reading and discussion with Anne Balay, author of Semi Queer: Inside the World of Gay, Trans, and Black Truck Drivers. 6 p.m. at Penn Book Center.
The Tire Fire series returns with readings by Steven Dunn, Oki Sogumi, Warren Longmire, and Quinton Lawrence! The reading will double as a fundraiser for Juntos, “a Latino immigrant community-led organization in Philadelphia fighting for our human rights as workers, parents, youth, and immigrants.” Hosted by Jaime Fountaine and Mike Ingram. 7 p.m. at Tattooed Mom.
Friday 10/19: Penn Book Center will host a reading and discussion with Allison Coffelt, author of Maps Are Lines We Draw: A Road Trip through Haiti. 6 p.m. at Penn Book Center.
