Friday 12/21: The Mechanics’ Institute will be hosting its final Writers Lunch of the year. Join Julian Esteban Torres, publisher-in-chief of The Nasiona Magazine, as well as Mechanics’ Institute writers who have recently published their books. Mechanics’ Institute in San Francisco at 12 p.m.
BAMPFA will be screening Fanny and Alexander, Ingmar Bergman’s story of a twentieth-century theatrical family told from the perspective of a brother and sister. BAMPFA in Berkeley at 7 p.m. ($9–$13, tickets required).
Saturday 12/22: Join Joan Schoettler as she reads from her newest children’s book, Ruth Asawa: A Sculpting Life. Schoettler’s book celebrates a great San Francisco artist, activist, and educator. Book Passage Ferry Building in San Francisco at 10 a.m.
Sunday 12/23: Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat uses archival film and photographs, as well as with Basquiat’s early work, to showcase the emergence of one of the great neo-expressionist artists. BAMPFA in Berkeley at 2 p.m. ($9–$13, tickets required).
