All quoted material in the comic is from the Narrative of Sojourner Truth by Sojourner Truth, written and edited by Olive Gilbert. An additional main source was Nell Irvin Painter’s excellent biography, Sojourner Truth: A Life, A Symbol, which not only creates a moving human portrait of an Afro-Dutch girl sold away from her parents, but which also thoughtfully debunks many of the myths we’ve inherited about her.
