National Poetry Month: A Day in the Life

I paid a girl to eat a strawberry on camera
At first mechanically
And then again sensually

I paid for two lucky green leaves
And put them in my pocket
To snack on later

I paid for a glorious phallic soft serve
after lunch while daydreaming about a former lover
It was vanilla

I paid a pianist to play
melancholy melodies beneath the moonlight
He smelled slightly of apples

I paid a hare in a tidy red bow
to tell jokes in a field of orange poppies
The goal was to get one poppy to laugh

I paid a girl to get down
on her knees to show that she can do
what leopards do

I paid for a baby seal
so I could gaze into its glassy black eyes
perhaps prolong its life on earth

I paid a girl to arouse me by
dribbling water out of her mouth
every time I said the word please

I paid someone to control the sky
with a digital camera from the nineties
His name was Sky

I paid my friends to step on their hands
with stilettos
The gift of stigmata

I paid for high heels because
It is important to buy one thing every day
even on a nice one like today
