Incantations for a Migrant’s Journey

Incantations for a Migrant’s Journey

The vulture does not scoop
from life’s streaming nectar;
the osprey is not drawn
to the delicacy of carrions—
may the jaws of this famished road
be sealed against the lure of your flesh.

The earth carries with ease
the weight of waters;
the snail does not buckle
beneath its own shell—
may you bear your life’s burden
with the grace of weaver ants.

Àṣẹ

Flitting monarchs do not long
for the pupa’s jade;
Ecdysial pythons do not yearn
for yesterday’s covering—
may each season’s new flavour
thin the taste of old pleasures.

Àṣẹ

Agẹ́mọ’s boast of a thousand rainbows
is a testament to its scaly skin;
the fringed toes of the basilisk
is a miracle on water—
may you unearth new delights
from your body’s many wonders.

Àṣẹ

Like the coconut,
may your journey break
open into sweetness.

Àṣẹ

And at its end—
more sweetness.
