Abel Sierra Madero holds a PhD in History from the University of Havana and is pursuing a second PhD in Literature at New York University. Over the last ten years, he has worked in the field of history of sexuality. He has lectured widely in universities in the US, Spain, UK, Italy, Israel, and Mexico. He has been awarded the Casa de las Américas Prize for his book Del Otro Lado del Espejo: La Sexualidad en la Construccion de la Nacion Cubana, published in 2006.
The comandante produced ideological fantasies on a mass scale within the context of the Cold War which led to an exotic, sexy, and happy vision of Cuba.
