Billy Burgos is a Graphic Designer/Illustrator/Poet originally from Belize, Central America who grew in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles where he still resides. He is an active member of The Anansi Writer’s Workshop and hosts Blog-talk Radio’s poetry show Word Ballast where he has made a name for himself by interviewing poets of color such as Nikkey Finney, Nikki Giovanni, Thomas Sayers Ellis and Jericho Brown. He has been published in numerous journals both in print and online and served as poetry facilitator of The Beyond Baroque poetry workshop and host of their monthly series The First Sunday Reading. In 2009 Billy was chosen as newer poet to watch by the L.A. Poetry Festival. His first collection of poetry titled Eulogy To An Unknown Tree was published by Writ Large Press in January 2013.

Where I Write #28: A Small Bench Between Two 25-Story Buildings

I was doing clerical work for a magazine publisher in a high-rise along the Wilshire corridor and each day I would take my one hour lunch on a small bench between two 25 story buildings. The proximity of all these tall structures created a vortex of wind that constantly combed through all these magnificent trees. One by one I had to know and then write about each individual Jacaranda, Magnolia and Floss Silk tree.
