The curse of being a writer is knowing other people. I need other people (to write about) but I can’t handle other people (the way I can literary characters).

Dave Madden is the author of The Authentic Animal: Inside the Odd and Obsessive World of Taxidermy. His shorter work's appeared in DIAGRAM, The Normal School, 1966, Rappahannock Review, and elsewhere. He teaches nonfiction in the MFA program at the University of San Francisco and co-edits The Cupboard, a quarterly pamphlet.
