Julia Cooke is the author of The Other Side of Paradise: Life in the New Cuba, from which this essay is adapted. Her writing has been featured in the New York Times, Virginia Quarterly Review, Condé Nast Traveller, and the Best American Travel Writing 2014 anthology, among many others. She lives in New York City, where she teaches writing at The New School.

The Rumpus publishes original fiction, poetry, literary humor writing, comics, essays, book reviews, and interviews with authors and artists of all kinds. Our mostly volunteer-run magazine strives to be a platform for risk-taking voices and writing that might not find a home elsewhere.
