Letters in the Mail & Letters in the Mail for Kids

Make your mailbox fun! Letters in the Mail is a Rumpus subscription in which you receive an actual, postmarked letter from one of your favorite writers in your actual, physical mailbox 2 x a month. Some of the letters are typed, others are handwritten, and some include doodles or poems. All of the letters are signed and include return addresses in case you want to reply.

We have a Readers Subscription for adults and a Young Readers Subscription for kids ages 6-12.

Letters in the Mail helps keep The Rumpus running—you can correspond with your favorite writers and support the magazine in one fell swoop.

Readers Subscription

The Readers Subscription is generally for adult readers (ages 13+) and is only $10 a month or $85 for a full year!

Recent and upcoming letter writers include Rebecca Makkai, Lilliam Rivera, Kali Fajardo-Anstine, Hala Alyan, C Pam Zhang, Elizabeth McCracken, Michelle Tea, Nadia Owusu, Christopher Soto, Meng Jin, Chen Chen, and many more.

If you’re still not yet convinced, read a couple of sample letters including Maggie Smith’s here and Lidia Yuknavitch’s here.

Young Readers Subscription

Letters for Kids fosters a love of reading and writing and is great for children 6–12, educators, classrooms, learning spaces of all kinds, and libraries. We offer monthly subscriptions, so children can correspond with their favorite writers and you’ll support the website in one fell swoop. You can view sample letters from Fran Wilde here and Claire M. Caterer here.

All letters are age-appropriate and original content specifically for Young Readers Letters in the Mail.

Recent and upcoming letter writers include Jason Reeves, Leslie Vedder, Kate McGovern, Allyson Lassiter and Stephanie Young, K. O’Neil, Karina Evans, Elisa A Bonnin, among others.

Two fun examples of the types of letters previous subscribers have received are available here and here.
