Marvel Comics recently announced their latest secret identity—underneath the spider suit is Miles Morales, whose black and Hispanic makeup mark a significant change in the ethnically homogeneity of mainstream superhero comics. Though killing off Peter Parker, the Spiderman before Morales, was a tough move, author Brian Michael Bendis made a socially-conscious decision to have this minority presence in the comic.
“Though both Marvel and DC Comics, its chief rival, have featured black and minority superheroes over the years, Mr. Bendis said that changing the identity of Spider-Man, a central character in the Marvel mythology if not its single most recognizable property, was a watershed moment.”
